Export for sharing

Choose output settings and delivery method for the destination you are publishing to.

Goal

Export a sharp file with the right format and size for the destination you are publishing to.

Prerequisites

  • Composition is finalized.
  • You know whether you want lighter share-ready files or lossless output.

Steps

  1. Open export settings.
  2. Start with JPEG and Balanced.
  3. Use Small for lighter share-ready files.
  4. Use Full only when you need the largest capped export the source, frame, and device budget can support.
  5. Switch to PNG when you want lossless output and can accept a larger file.
  6. Deliver using one action:
    • Share
    • Copy to clipboard
    • Save to Photos

Verify Result

  • Exported file dimensions match expectation.
  • No unexpected blur or artifacts.
  • Destination app displays the image correctly.

Quick Rollback / Undo Path

  • Re-export with Small or Balanced if the file is larger than needed.
  • Switch from JPEG to PNG if fine UI edges look soft.
  • Re-open export settings and reset to JPEG + Balanced.

If Full looks softer than preview

The source image or frame asset may be limiting export size. Compare Balanced and Full in the same viewer.

If you still see a watermark

Free save, copy, and share exports include a Shotwell watermark. Shotwell Pro removes it.
